k.d.lang

k.d.lang is a Canadian born singer-songwriter who helped to make the 80s and 90s awesome. She has one of the most beautiful voices in the business. My favorite song by her is called “Constant Craving”. When she was on MTV Unplugged her voice sounded just like the album; the entire performance was flawless

For the people of today MTV Unplugged performances are for musicians with true talent. In other words no studio effects like Auto-Tunes are allowed. Auto-Tunes is nothing more than pitch-correcting technology used to correct flawed voices!!! Yeah I said it! LMBO!!!

k.d.lang is currently on The Ingenue Redux US Tour. The Grammy winner recently won an award from the Americana Awards. When you get a chance check out her music it’s what I am listening to today. I guarantee that her voice will have you craving for more constantly!

Wubba, Wubba, Wubba, Y’all

I want my MTV!!! Did I ever share that I wanted to be a MTV VJ growing up? My top three favorite VJs were Kennedy, Karen Duffy, and Riki Rachtman. I love music so much being an MTV VJ gave a person a chance to share videos of various music. I would have been happy being a DJ too but depending on the radio station there would be a slim chance of the music being diverse. For an example 103 Jamz would not play heavy metal and FM 99 WNOR wouldn’t play hip hop.

I love Jack White because he’s not afraid to branch out. Chris Cornell recorded an album that was called Scream and a lot of rock fans couldn’t cope. Even Trent Reznor took shots at Chris Cornell for making the album Scream. My favorite song from Scream was the song Scream. Scream was a great album in my opinion. Chris Cornell’s voice was beautiful, he could sing anything and it would sound good!!! Like real talk.

Fans should look at music like a painting. How many paintings in an art museum has only one color? Just like how most musicians play more than just one instrument. Music is art. When an musician makes music it can be something beautiful.

Anywho, I’m too old to be a VJ now and MTV totally sucks it’s nothing like the 80s and 90s. I remember watching MTV’s first video which was “Video Killed The Radio Star” by The Buggles. Today reality tv has killed MTV.

What a bummer!

Remember the Time

Oprah Winfrey made some amazing points when she accepted her Golden Globe Award. One of the things that she said was everyone has a story and for us to share it. With that being said I going to share MY STORY because it’s mine ALONE!!! No one knows MY LIFE STORY better than me except God almighty. Anyone who attempts to lessen my story has a motive and it’s an evil one. I am me and I am Not caring about who accepts me or not. I know what my hobbies are. I know what kinds of music that I love and how long that I have been listening to it. And most importantly I know who I am attracted and how long it’s been.

I have been listening to heavy metal when it was unheard of. My mother brought me shirts with heavy metal bands on them. In the 80s people used to write on their jeans mine had the name of metal bands on them. I had my walled plastered with all kinds of musicians including heavy metal bands.

It’s comical how some people think they know your history but really they don’t. Interracial dating is becoming more common between white men and black women. I have always been attracted to white men my first serious boyfriend was white. My first boyfriend brought me a car and we put stickers of heavy metal bands all over it. One time while my boyfriend at the time was out to sea my sister asked for a ride and a cop pulled me over for gp. Here I am a black woman with braids driving a car with heavy metal stickers on it in the early 90s. My sister can back me up on this story as well as a few others.

Interracial dating between white men and black women is really nothing new; it’s just becoming more common now. Some people act like it’s a big discovery like Columbus claiming America when Leif Erikson had already been there and done that. Facts!!!!! There are more books, movies, television shows, and groups that promotes interracial dating but they wasn’t around when I was dating outside of my race.

Now there are people who be like why are people being so vocal about interracial dating between white men and black women? Well because it’s still not really accepted and in order for couples to make it support is needed. It’s not easy to date interracial; it’s hard now and it was even harder when I first started dating outside of my race. I remember one time when my white boyfriend at the time and I was holding hands walking through the mall together when a large group of black males attempted to walk between us to get us to stop holding hands. I told him to ignore them because they would have tired to just him and me. I wouldn’t stood there and allow anyone to hurt him.

I am so excited that more and more people are following their hearts and being who they are. I rather for people to think I am strange than to Not be free because I am afraid of what people think of me. I am going to listen to the music that I enjoy and love who I want to love whether they have my skin color or not.

Pink Metal Head

I have to start off by saying that I am totally stoked!!! Here on be lifted I talk about the things that are thought about but they are not spoken about. I have shared about my love for heavy metal mind you that I listen to all music however rock/heavy metal is my favorite. Every since I was young I have loved heavy metal!!! I grew up in a time where a black girl listening to heavy metal was unheard of, I’m thankful that my mother allowed me to be free to listen to what I wanted to. It was no secret about my love for heavy metal. The first song that had me hooked on rock music was AC/DC “You Shook Me All Night Long” which came out in 1980, the video was very cool. When Nine Inch Nails first came out in 1989 with “Head Like a Hole” I was hooked and I have been a fan of their’s every since. Trent Reznor and I both share the same birthday, May 17th baby!! Type O Negative really has made an impact on me and I love the band so much.

The reason why I am bring up my love for heavy metal/rock music is because recently I came across a black young lady who loves heavy metal like I do. The you tuber’s name is pink metal head and she’s 21 years old. It’s so refreshing to see young black ladies owning their identity unapologetically. She did share that there have been people who try to match a person’s race to music. Example that black people listen to hip hop and r & b only and that white people listens to heavy metal/ rock music only. The stereotypes seriously has got to go. Things have gotten a lot better from when I was growing up. Seeing more and more young black ladies as well as men appreciate heavy metal just chokes me up. I just had to blog about it.

Both of my sons listens to heavy metal/rock music; my youngest listens to everything that I do. My youngest son’s favorite bands are Metallica and Danzig. His favorite song by Metallica is “One” and his favorite song by Danzig is “Mother”. Today my youngest and I was jamming to Pantera, Megadeath, White Zombie, Type O Negative, Metallica and the list just goes on and on. With the younger generations tastes in music becoming more diverse, it’s the best feeling on Earth. I just want to tell the youth of today that music transcends racial boundaries if you want to listen to country music go ahead I love Darius Rucker. I have been a fan of Darius Rucker every since he was the lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish. If you love hip hop and R & B listen to it and if you love heavy metal/rock music then jam on. If you love all music like I do, that’s great too. Whatever music that you choose to listen to please do as long as you are being you. Even our choices of music says a lot about who we are so do what makes you happy as long as it isn’t hurting anybody. I’m proud of the upcoming heavy metal generation,it’s becoming more colorful ; which is excellent.

Fell on Black Days

Soundgarden

Whatsoever I’ve feared has come to life
Whatsoever I’ve fought off became my life
Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile
Sunspots have faded and now I’m doing time
Now I’m doing time
‘Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black days

Whomsoever I’ve cured, I’ve sickened now
And whomsoever I’ve cradled, I’ve put you down
I’m a search light soul they say
But I can’t see it in the night

I’m only faking when I get it right
When I get it right

‘Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black days

How would I know
That this could be my fate?
How would I know
That this could be my fate? Yeah

Uh, uh, uh
Uh, uh, uh
Uh, uh, uh

So what you wanted to see good
Has made you blind
And what you wanted to be yours
Has made it mine

Don’t you lock up something
That you wanted to see fly
Hands are for shaking
No, not tying, no, not tying

I sure don’t mind a change
I sure don’t mind a change
Yeah, I sure don’t mind, sure don’t mind a change
I sure don’t mind a change

‘Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black days

How would I know
That this could be my fate?
How would I know
That this could be my fate?

How would I know
That this could be my fate?
How would I know
That this could be my fate?

I sure don’t mind a change

For Chris

Music transcends race, age, gender and social class. Music can bring different people to together while they sing the same lyrics to a song. People who know me know that I listen to all kinds of music however rock music is my baby. I love rock music. The Seattle Scene was everything Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains one can throw Candlebox up in there too. I had every cassette of the bands from the Settle Scene.  Growing up 1991 was a great year of music in April my mother brought me the cassette Temple of the Dog and in October Badmotorfinger. My mother brought me Motorvision on VHS of course it was the 90s. Man, kids of today will never know what it’s like to watch a VHS tape and be able to tell which parts were watched the most from constantly rewinding certain parts on a tape. On Motorvision I kept watching the part where Soundgarden performed Searching with My Good Eye Closed the energy was amazing!!!! I have been a fan of Soundgarden for more than half of my age. A lot of mainstream fans (not putting them down) think that Superunknown put Soundgarden on the map but it was Badmotorfinger actually. My favorite songs off Badmotorfinger are Rusty Cage, Outshined, Slaves and Bulldozers and Searching with My Good Eye Closed. As a teenager I battled with depression and music helped me out a lot. This is the reason why I was so heartbroken about Chris Cornell’s death. I am Not idolizing Chris Cornell and quite frankly I’m sick of people who make a person feel bad about sharing about how someone touched their life.

My birthday is May 17 and Chris Cornell died on my birthday it’s so sad. I remember my phone going off from an email that I received. The email said Audioslave and Soundgarden leader singer so I click on it to open it and found out about his passing. I feel so sorry for Chris Cornell’s wife and children as well as everyone whose lives that he touched. Chris Cornell voice was unique that could hit a high C vocal range and he was an amazing songwriter too. Chris wrote most of the songs of the groups that he was in. On the album Superunknown one of my favorite songs is “Fell on Black Days. Fell on Black Days written by Chris is about how he suffered from a severe case of depression during his teenage years rarely leaving the house. Chris once spent a whole year without leaving the house he played the guitar and drums. I could go on and on about Chris Cornell’s songs and his talent. In an interview with Launch Radio Networks, Chris Cornell said: “The ‘be yourself’ part really just came from a lot of things that I’ve gone through in my life and a lot of different changes and all the different tragedies and all the horrendously stupid mistakes I’ve made in my personal life, and wanting to be able to make up for those things and wanting to be able to not be ashamed, all that stuff. You know, that’s the one thing about getting older that’s better, and this song kind of says it so simply, to a degree that 10 years ago I would’ve been embarrassed to put it in a song ’cause it is so simple. But there it is.”

In the song “Show me how to live”, Chris Cornell asks for help from God, saying that He created him, but now needs his guidance. There are a few religious references in the song, including “Nail in my hand,” which is relates to the crucifixion of Jesus.

Near the end, Cornell created an interesting vocal effect by hitting his throat with the side of his hand to change the pitch of his voice

I went over to Chris Cornell’s website and read his thoughts about his tribute to Prince; he performed Prince’s song “Nothing Compares 2 U”. He said “Sadly now his own lyrics in this song could not be more relevant than at this moment, and I sing them now in reverence as I pay tribute to this unequaled artist who has given all of our lives so much inspiration and made the world so much more interesting.” Those words are exactly how I feel right now Chris Cornell there will never be another like you because “Nothing Compares 2 U.” I know that you sometimes “Fell on Black Days” wanted the “Black Hole Sun” to come but you continued “ Searching with Your Good Eye Closed” asked God to “Show You How to Live” while you continued to “Be Yourself”. You were an awesome artist Say Hello to Heaven.
