Laying Down the Torch

I adore Alanis Morissette, I have been a massive fan of hers since her first album. I know, I know, I am telling my age, but hey it’s all right. Jagged Little Pill was Alanis first album that was released on June 13, 1995. It’s funny how little things have huge meanings later. Recently I have done an honest elevation of myself, and I am glad that I did it. At times some of our biggest epiphanies come from our deepest pain. Sadly they sometimes come at a time when it’s too late to be able to change certain situations, but at least we grasp some real realizations. Alanis Morissette music holds a lot of significance for me because it’s part of my memories of my first love my true love. Love is a powerful feeling and beautiful too. Love is scary because it requires vulnerability. It requires not having any walls, how else would a person be able to feel it? People who have never experienced true love know nothing about why the people who do act the way that they do.

The other day I listened to the song called Torch, it is a fantastic song. Alanis wrote the song about her break up with Ryan Reynold. They had a serious relationship. Their relationship was five years long, and they got engaged. Talking about going from you oughta know to a torch mentality. Like Woah. The torch was written to help her get over their break up. Their breakup was mutual. She took the high road writing about everything that she loved and missed soldier yet on in such an elegant way. True love can get a person to reflect on the time that happened yet be able to wish the other person the best.

Afterall behaving negative wouldn’t bring back a relationship that ended. Does it hurt? Yes, it does. Letting a person go who you had all these dreams attached to like getting married and having children together, it’s a big jagged pill to swallow for sure. I was there myself before. Many couldn’t understand the reason why I did and felt the way that I did. I was in love with my first love, and I will always have a love for him. I have always wished him well and hoped that he received the love that he deserved. Sometimes true love can happen at the wrong time my mother was dying of cancer at the time. I had so much responsibility at the time.

Torch taught me that I was always on the right track even many years ago. Most people don’t realize what real love requires. I am just thankful that I experienced true love at least once in my life. If I never do, again, it’s alright. I have once carried a torch, have laid it down, and have no hope of relighting aka rekindling anything. Betty White turned 97 years old the other day, and she said something so profound she said, “Enjoy life,” Accentuate the positive, not the negative. It sounds so trite, but a lot of people will pick out something to complain about, rather than say, Hey, that was great! It’s not hard to find great stuff if you look.” The best advice about life ever!

September Sun

It’s no secret how much that I love Type O Negative. The 90s rocked and Type O Negative made it happen. I was debating which song I wanted to share it was a tie between Love You to Death and September Sun. Well it’s September so it’s obvious which song won. Check out the lyrics:

September Sun
Type O Negative
The album’s second single, which was cut down from over nine minutes to under five for radio.
September sun, glowing golden hair
Now keep in mind, son: she was never there
October’s rust bisecting black storm clouds
Only the deaf hear my silent shouts

Yet in the dark, still he screams your name (Elizabeth!)
Nights living death with witch rhymes insane
Ten years amassed, para toda mi vida?
Lost man in time; was his name Peter?

September sun, rotted Flatbush porch
I would have run then, had I known the cost
Autumnal rays turned your eyes to stone
Did it give you pleasure to steal my soul?

Yet in the dark, still he screams your name (Elizabeth!)
Nights living death with witch rhymes insane
Ten years amassed, para toda mi vida?
Lost man in time; was his name Peter?

Leave her alone
I said leave her alone

Me? I know why

Which Playlist is Best?

Am I going to listen to the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Faith No More? Jack White is in a class of his own. He always wins with me.

I’m doing my assignment soon so I want music to play all the way through. Do you remember a time when albums were made instead of mixtapes? Yeah. Me too, it was in the 90s. In the 90s every genre was great it’s the truth. The 90s music could stomp today’s music into the dirt. Don’t make me call Mike Patton over here to prove it.

Okay. Faith No More is my choice of music for today. Epic! What it is? You want it all but you can’t have it. It’s in your face but you can’t grab it. Mike Patton has a high octane voice that is thought to be higher than Mariah Carey’s. That’s amazing. The riffs on Epic though and that video! The videos of today are nothing like years ago.

Puddle of Mudd

As I was looking through my Facebook news feed I saw advertising from FM99 about a Puddle of Mudd concert. Memories of me listening to the song Blurry came crashing through. So I went on YouTube to watch the video. As I watched the video for Blurry I read the comments.

It sadden me to know about Wes Scantlin’s substance abuse problems. I’m glad that he went into rehab and I pray that everything works out for him.

People judge a person with substance abuse problems not realizing most times when a person has the problems there is always a reason why. We all have battles that we need to overcome and for some it’s substance abuse. I try really hard to empathize with others and do it with genuineness. Lest we forget that no one is exempt from hard times.

k.d.lang

k.d.lang is a Canadian born singer-songwriter who helped to make the 80s and 90s awesome. She has one of the most beautiful voices in the business. My favorite song by her is called “Constant Craving”. When she was on MTV Unplugged her voice sounded just like the album; the entire performance was flawless

For the people of today MTV Unplugged performances are for musicians with true talent. In other words no studio effects like Auto-Tunes are allowed. Auto-Tunes is nothing more than pitch-correcting technology used to correct flawed voices!!! Yeah I said it! LMBO!!!

k.d.lang is currently on The Ingenue Redux US Tour. The Grammy winner recently won an award from the Americana Awards. When you get a chance check out her music it’s what I am listening to today. I guarantee that her voice will have you craving for more constantly!

Wubba, Wubba, Wubba, Y’all

I want my MTV!!! Did I ever share that I wanted to be a MTV VJ growing up? My top three favorite VJs were Kennedy, Karen Duffy, and Riki Rachtman. I love music so much being an MTV VJ gave a person a chance to share videos of various music. I would have been happy being a DJ too but depending on the radio station there would be a slim chance of the music being diverse. For an example 103 Jamz would not play heavy metal and FM 99 WNOR wouldn’t play hip hop.

I love Jack White because he’s not afraid to branch out. Chris Cornell recorded an album that was called Scream and a lot of rock fans couldn’t cope. Even Trent Reznor took shots at Chris Cornell for making the album Scream. My favorite song from Scream was the song Scream. Scream was a great album in my opinion. Chris Cornell’s voice was beautiful, he could sing anything and it would sound good!!! Like real talk.

Fans should look at music like a painting. How many paintings in an art museum has only one color? Just like how most musicians play more than just one instrument. Music is art. When an musician makes music it can be something beautiful.

Anywho, I’m too old to be a VJ now and MTV totally sucks it’s nothing like the 80s and 90s. I remember watching MTV’s first video which was “Video Killed The Radio Star” by The Buggles. Today reality tv has killed MTV.

What a bummer!

Remember the Time

Oprah Winfrey made some amazing points when she accepted her Golden Globe Award. One of the things that she said was everyone has a story and for us to share it. With that being said I going to share MY STORY because it’s mine ALONE!!! No one knows MY LIFE STORY better than me except God almighty. Anyone who attempts to lessen my story has a motive and it’s an evil one. I am me and I am Not caring about who accepts me or not. I know what my hobbies are. I know what kinds of music that I love and how long that I have been listening to it. And most importantly I know who I am attracted and how long it’s been.

I have been listening to heavy metal when it was unheard of. My mother brought me shirts with heavy metal bands on them. In the 80s people used to write on their jeans mine had the name of metal bands on them. I had my walled plastered with all kinds of musicians including heavy metal bands.

It’s comical how some people think they know your history but really they don’t. Interracial dating is becoming more common between white men and black women. I have always been attracted to white men my first serious boyfriend was white. My first boyfriend brought me a car and we put stickers of heavy metal bands all over it. One time while my boyfriend at the time was out to sea my sister asked for a ride and a cop pulled me over for gp. Here I am a black woman with braids driving a car with heavy metal stickers on it in the early 90s. My sister can back me up on this story as well as a few others.

Interracial dating between white men and black women is really nothing new; it’s just becoming more common now. Some people act like it’s a big discovery like Columbus claiming America when Leif Erikson had already been there and done that. Facts!!!!! There are more books, movies, television shows, and groups that promotes interracial dating but they wasn’t around when I was dating outside of my race.

Now there are people who be like why are people being so vocal about interracial dating between white men and black women? Well because it’s still not really accepted and in order for couples to make it support is needed. It’s not easy to date interracial; it’s hard now and it was even harder when I first started dating outside of my race. I remember one time when my white boyfriend at the time and I was holding hands walking through the mall together when a large group of black males attempted to walk between us to get us to stop holding hands. I told him to ignore them because they would have tired to just him and me. I wouldn’t stood there and allow anyone to hurt him.

I am so excited that more and more people are following their hearts and being who they are. I rather for people to think I am strange than to Not be free because I am afraid of what people think of me. I am going to listen to the music that I enjoy and love who I want to love whether they have my skin color or not.

Pink Metal Head

I have to start by saying that I am stoked!!! Here on be lifted I talk about the things that we think about, but they spoke about. I have shared about my love for heavy metal mind you that I listen to all music; however, rock/heavy metal is my favorite. Ever since I was young, I have loved heavy metal!!! I grew up in a time where a black girl listening to heavy metal was unheard of, and I’m thankful that my mother allowed me to be free to listen to what I wanted to. It was no secret about my love for heavy metal. The first song that had me hooked on rock music was AC/DC “You Shook Me All Night Long,” which came out in 1980, the video was very cool. When Nine Inch Nails first came out in 1989 with “Head Like a Hole” I was hooked, and I have been a fan of their’s ever since. Trent Reznor and I both share the same birthday, May 17th baby!! Type O Negative has made an impact on me, and I love the band so much.

The reason why I bring up my love for heavy metal/rock music is that recently I came across a young black lady who loves heavy metal as I do. The you tuber’s name is pink metal head, and she’s 21 years old. It’s so refreshing to see young black ladies owning their identity unapologetically. She did share that there have been people who try to match a person’s race to music. Example that black people listen to hip hop and r & b only and that white people listen to heavy metal/ rock music only. The stereotypes seriously have got to go. Things had gotten a lot better from when I was growing up. Seeing more and more young black ladies, as well as men, appreciate heavy metal chokes me up. I just had to blog about it.

Both of my sons listens to heavy metal/rock music; my youngest listens to everything that I do. My youngest son’s favorite bands are Metallica and Danzig. His favorite song by Metallica is “One,” and his favorite song by Danzig is “Mother.” Today my youngest and I was jamming to Pantera, Megadeath, White Zombie, Type O Negative, Metallica and the list goes on and on. With the younger generations tastes in music becoming more diverse, it’s the best feeling on Earth. I want to tell the youth of today that music transcends racial boundaries if you want to listen to country music go ahead I love Darius Rucker. I have been a fan of Darius Rucker every since he was the lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish. If you love hip hop and R & B, listen to it and if you love heavy metal/rock music, then jam on. If you love all music as I do, that’s great too. Whatever music that you choose to listen to, please do as long as you are you. Even our choices of music say a lot about who we are so doing what makes you happy as long as it isn’t hurting anybody. I’m proud of the upcoming heavy metal generation; it’s becoming more colorful; which is excellent.
